2017 Hyundai Elantra Review

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra in SE Manual, SE Automatic, and Limited models is a four-door, five-passenger, front-wheel drive, refined economy car comparable to the Ford Focus, Mazda 3, and Honda Civic. Previously in between compact and mid-size categories, the new 2017 Elantra is firmly mid-size. New powertrains emphasize fuel economy as much as high-speed performance. Standard in SE models is a four-cylinder, 2,000-cubic centimeter (cc), 147-horsepower engine with a six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic. Performance is smooth, acceleration steady, and shifting quick for economy. An optimized suspension, basic strut up front and twist-beam in the rear, and a very stiff body afford a remarkably comfortable ride that feels best in the optional Sport driving mode with electric power steering assist. Hyundai aims for top safety ratings for the 2017 Elantra from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, and from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a five-star overall NHTSA rating. For the SE seven airbags are standard and a rearview camera optional and standard for the Limited. Standard for all models are power windows/locks/mirrors, cruise control, air conditioning, a tilting and telescoping steering wheel, and a six-way adjustable driver seat.
Interior

The cabin of the new Elantra is linear in shape like that of the Sonata, a spacious, airy interior with comfortable, supportive seats. Front-seat space is very good with lots of small-item storage in the doors, the console, and a covered bin in front of the shift lever. The back seats are slightly higher, but head and knee room is still ample for tall adults. All seats are shaped comfortably. Power is optional for the six-way adjustable driver seat. In the back, the rear seats have a fold-down section that increases available cargo space. There is a power, hands-free tailgate that senses and responds to movements, generally of feet, under the rear bumper. For an economy car, the Elantra is quite quiet inside even at high speeds. More than half the Elantra body is high-strength steel bonded with industrial glue to make it stiff for good handling and quiet rides.

Exterior

The 2017 Elantra is 179.9 inches long, 0.8 inches more than last year, while the 106.3-inch wheelbase is the same. It's an inch wider at 69.9, and curb weight varies from about 2,800 to 3,000 pounds. Hyundai has deemphasized the daring design of the previous Elantra and smoothed it out for 2017. Cleaner, simpler curves are less conspicuous and more conventional. The curved lines of the rear doors are now straighter and the rear fenders and roofline blend more subtly than before now as on a Ford Fusion or a Chrysler 200. New air intakes at the front corners conduct air around the tires. Three pentagonal light-emitting diode taillights reach from the center to each side.

Powertrain

The 2017 Elantra presents a new four-cylinder, double overhead cam, 16-valve, dual continuously-variable valve-timing, multi-point injected, 147-horsepower engine with a limited lean-burn cycle for fuel economy joined with either a six-speed manual transmission standard on SE models or a six-speed automatic standard on Limited models and optional on SEs. The new powertrain accelerates quickly thanks to the engine's high 12.5:1 compression ratio and quietly thanks to sound-deadening on Limited models. It revs happily up to its redline. There will be an alternate drivetrain also new for 2017, a four-cylinder, 1,600-cc, turbocharged, 128-horsepower engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for the Elantra Eco model.

Mechanical

Elantra performance, as with the current Sonata, features pleasant acceleration and predictably capable handling. Ultra-sport performance is not part of the plan. Steering, transmission, and throttle are variable with available Eco, Normal, and Sport driving modes, but Normal mode seems to be best for the Elantra's refined economical driving. A better arrangement might be to tune the driving modes separately. The transmission might benefit from application of the Sport mode, like most modern automatics programmed to upshift quickly and to temporize on downshifts, a tendency even more apparent in Eco mode. Normal or Sport mode, however, improves steering performance. Normal mode feels more natural than Sport, in which, however, added weight helps the car track better. The stiff new Elantra body and redesigned suspension smooth out rough rides over even deteriorated road surfaces. With MacPherson struts and torsion beams, a vertical shock-absorbing movement, and absorbent bushings, the Elantra responds well with constant composure to bumps in the road. Never overly firm, its ride is supple and close to the ideal within the limitations of economy cars. It never punishes a driver for selecting a back road instead of an expressway.

Safety

Neither the IIHS nor the NHTSA has yet to crash-test the Elantra. Hyundai predicts it will earn top ratings from both agencies with the new strong body and advanced optional safety features. All Elantra sedans have anti-lock brakes, brake assist, driver knee airbags, side-curtain and side-impact airbags, electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control, traction control, tire pressure monitoring, vehicle stability management, front and rear crumple zones, and special, driver-side, blind-spot mirrors. Rearview cameras and blind-spot monitors are options for SE models and standard on Limiteds. Also available for Limiteds is safety technology more advanced than that for any mid-size rival: forward-collision warnings with automatic braking and pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and blind-spot monitors. Standard Hyundai warranties for all Elantras are a new vehicle limited warranty for five years or 60,000 miles, a powertrain repair or replacement warranty for ten years or 100,000 miles, an anti-perforation warranty for body repair for seven years, and 24-hour roadside assistance for five years.
