Vehicle Overview

Since 2011, the Veloster has been that rare car that merges attractive design, sports-like driving dynamics, and a rich collection of features with reasonable pricing. On January 15, 2018, its manufacturer, Hyundai Motors, unveiled the nameplate's second-generation model at the North American International Autoshow, thus prepping it for the 2019 model year. The vehicle is now split into five trims: the base-level model, the 2.0 Premium, the Turbo R-Spec, the Turbo, and the Turbo Ultimate.

Boulder Review - 2019 Hyundai Veloster OVERVIEW

Exterior

The 2019 Veloster is designed as a coupe with three doors: two at the front end and one at the back that serves as the entryway to the cabin space. Standard on the car are a rear wiper, projector headlights that automatically switch on or off depending on amount of outdoor light, a rear spoiler, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The 17-inch wheels are replaced by 18-inch ones on the 2.0 Premium. True to its unique character, the R-Spec has a unique grille and rear spoiler, in addition to a swap of the halogen bulbs on the headlights and taillights with longer-lasting and brighter LED ones. On the Turbo and Turbo Ultimate, the exterior mirrors are enhanced with turn-signal indicators; the latter has a unique two-tone roof, which contrasts a black finish with whatever color you adopt for the rest of the car's body.

Interior

Size-classified as a compact coupe, the 2019 Hyundai Veloster has two rows of seats to accommodate up to four people. The rear bench-style seat has 60/40 split-folding ability for expanding the cargo space into the cabin. Upgrading to the 2.0 Premium introduces front-seat heating ability and leather/cloth-insert upholstery. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob debut on the mid-level Turbo R-Spec; the leather on the Turbo's steering wheel is perforated to add pattern and texture. Also added on the Turbo is power lumbar adjustment for the driver's seat. Only the top-of-the-line Turbo Ultimate has leather seats. Worthy of note is Active Sound Design, which is standard on all Turbo models for enhancing intake and exhaust powertrain sounds inside the cabin to further enforce their racing-inspired driving feel.

For comfort and comfortability, the coupe starts with features such as cruise control, Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone operation, a USB port for playing media from your mobile devices and two more strictly for charging them, an AM/FM radio tuner, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ for executing infotainment functions with your smartphone, and six-speaker audio with a 7-inch display screen. If you go with the Premium, there will be the addition of automatic temperature control with auto defogging ability, a 4.2-inch color instrument color display, a wireless charging pad, proximity key entry with push-button engine start, onboard voice recognition, a complimentary SiriusXM® satellite radio subscription, an eight-speaker Infinity® Premium Audio system (in place of the six-speaker audio), and the Blue Link Connected Car Service® suite, which provides functions such as automatic collision notification, SOS emergency assistance, and monthly vehicle health reporting. Alloy pedals debut on the Turbo R-Spec, and the Turbo gets an additional sunroof. Unique to the Turbo Ultimate are a heads-up display, smart cruise control (depending on which transmission you choose), and a smart key system.

Boulder Review - 2019 Hyundai Veloster Mechanical

Mechanical

The new Hyundai vehicle uses a MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension for ensuring a smooth ride on rough or bumpy driving surfaces. The Turbo variants, however, has their suspensions sport-tuned for a firmer, more exciting driving experience. Also present are four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes for ultimate stopping ability.

Powertrain

New for 2019 Hyundai Veloster is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine that produces up to 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. Normally paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic gearbox, the 2019 Hyundai Veloster uses the Atkinson Cycle for increased efficiency and lower emissions. However, the Turbo R-Spec is the only trim that uses the Gamma engine: a smaller yet more powerful 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline-direct-injection I4 that produces 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque and leads out to dual centered mounted exhaust outlets. Also, it's the only trim with the 6-speed manual transmission as standard. Also unique is the Turbo trim, which has a standard 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and SHIFTRONIC® gear control. (Paddle shifters are also on the 2.0 Premium.) Notably, the automatic and dual-clutch transmissions include three driver-selectable modes-Normal, Sport, and Smart-to change driving feel via powertrain tweaks. Regardless of drivetrain, the car adopts a front-engine front-wheel-drive layout.

Safety

Standard safety features on this Hyundai coupe include six airbags, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, LED daytime running lights, a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines, lane keep assist, driver attention alert, torque vectoring control, and forward collision-avoidance alert. A blind spot detection system is added on the Premium and higher, and hill start assist control appears if you go with at least the R-Spec. The Turbo and Turbo Ultimate are united in having rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist, with the latter further enhanced with pedestrian detection ability.
